Sex-selective abortion and infanticide

When a mom and a dad decide to have a baby, they don't usually get to choose if it will be a boy or a girl. Sometimes though, some people want the baby to be a boy or a girl very badly. And if they find out that the baby growing inside the mom's tummy is not the gender they want, they may do something very wrong, called sex-selective abortion or infanticide.

Abortion means stopping a pregnancy on purpose so that the baby doesn't come out and get born. Infanticide is when a baby is born, but someone kills it because they don't want it or don't like it.

Sex-selective abortion and infanticide happen when people want a boy, for example, but find out they are having a girl. They may think boys are better than girls, for many different reasons. They may want a boy because they think boys can work better, or they will take care of them when they are old, or they like boys more than girls. This is called gender discrimination, and it is very bad because girls and boys should be valued the same.

So, instead of being happy that they are going to have a baby, these people may decide to have an abortion, to stop the pregnancy if it’s a girl, or they may kill the baby if it’s a girl after it's born. This is wrong because every baby, whether a boy or a girl, is important, and every baby deserves to live, be loved and grow up well.

It's important to remember that every person is unique, regardless of their gender, and every person has their own gifts and talents that make them special. Nobody is better or worse because they are a boy or a girl. So we should always treat everyone with respect and kindness, no matter what gender they are.
