ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sexual orientation and military service

Sexual orientation means who you have romantic or sexual feelings for, whether it's someone of the same gender (gay or lesbian), someone of a different gender (straight), or someone of any gender (bisexual).

Military service is a job where people work to protect their country, and they often have to go to other places around the world to do this job.

In some countries, including the United States, people used to be kicked out of the military if they were gay or lesbian. This means that if someone working in the military liked someone of the same gender, they could lose their job just for that reason.

However, in recent years, the government changed the rules so that people can't be kicked out of the military just for being gay or lesbian. This means that people of any sexual orientation can serve in the military as long as they are able to do the job well and follow the rules.

Although this change has been good for many people who might have been unfairly disqualified from serving in the military, some people still believe that being gay or lesbian is not acceptable, and they might not welcome people of different sexual orientations in the military. This is not fair, but it is a problem that people are working to fix.
