Shaft bow

Imagine you have a stick that is straight, like a pencil. Now imagine that you hold the stick in the middle with one hand and with your other hand you push the top of the stick forward, so it bends a little bit. This is what we call bowing the stick.

Now let's talk about a golf club. The long part of a golf club is called the shaft. Sometimes, when you hit the golf ball, the shaft of the club bends a little bit, just like the stick we were talking about earlier. This is called shaft bow.

Shaft bow happens because when you hit the ball, the club head slows down, but the rest of the club – including the shaft – keeps moving forward. This can cause the shaft to bend a little bit, like a bow.

Golfers can use the amount of shaft bow as feedback on the quality of their swing. If the shaft bows too much or too little, it can mean that their swing isn't working as well as it could be. That's why it's important for golfers to pay attention to the amount of shaft bow they get when they hit the ball.
