ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Shallow water blackout

Okay kiddo, so imagine you’re swimming in a pool and you feel like you need to take a breath, right? Well, your body knows to take you up to the surface so you can breathe. But sometimes, if you stay underwater for too long, the amount of oxygen in your body can get really low, which can make you pass out or even die.

This is something called shallow water blackout. It can happen when a person is swimming in water that’s not very deep, like a pool or even the ocean. When you’re holding your breath, your body uses up the oxygen in your bloodstream. If you don't get to breathe before your body's oxygen is gone, you could pass out.

So, it's very important to make sure you always take enough breaths when you’re swimming and never hold your breath for too long, especially if you’re swimming alone. It’s always best to have someone with you in case something goes wrong.

And if you ever feel dizzy or lightheaded when you’re swimming, make sure you get to the edge of the pool or shore right away and breathe deeply until you feel better. Stay safe and keep swimming!
