Shanghai tunnels

Shanghai tunnels are like secret tunnels that are found in the city of Shanghai, which is a big city in China. But we're not talking about the tunnels in Shanghai, China here. We're talking about the Shanghai tunnels that were built in Portland, Oregon, USA, a long time ago!

A long time ago, in the late 19th century, Portland was a booming trading port for the Pacific Northwest region of the USA. A lot of ships would come to Portland from other places like Asia, and many of the sailors and workers who were on those ships would often visit the bars and shops around town.

But some of these sailors and workers had bad intentions. They would sneak into the bars and shops and kidnap other people, forcing them to work on their ships without pay. This was illegal and really mean, but some people did it anyway.

These secret tunnels were built as a way to transport people from the bars to the ships without them being seen by the police or anyone else. The kidnappers would take people from the bars and put them in the tunnels, and then take them down to the ships. These tunnels were really dark and scary, and people were often kept there for days until the next ship arrived.

Eventually, the city of Portland realized what was happening and made the tunnels illegal. They even filled in some of the tunnels to try and stop the kidnappings.

Today, some people say that the tunnels are haunted by the ghosts of the people who were kidnapped and forced to work on the ships. But nobody knows for sure if those stories are true.

So, that's what the Shanghai tunnels are! They were secret tunnels used by people who did bad things a long time ago in Portland, Oregon.
