Shifting cultivation is like playing with toys in your room. You play with one toy for some time and then you get bored of it. So, you pick up another toy and start playing with it. Similarly, in shifting cultivation, people prefer different pieces of land to grow crops every year instead of growing crops on the same land every time just like playing with the same toy.
Now, let's say you have a big field and you divide it into smaller parts. In one part, you grow corn, in another part, you grow beans, and in the third part, you grow rice. After the crops are harvested, you let that piece of land rest and recover before you start planting again. This is called leaving fallow land. During this time, the land gets nutrients by itself and becomes healthy again.
After some time, you go back to the first piece of land where you grew corn and start planting corn again. This technique helps you keep growing crops without the soil becoming unhealthy and unusable. This way, you can keep playing with your toys without getting bored, and your plants can keep growing healthily too.
