ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Shoelace knot

So you know how you have shoelaces on your shoes that you tie up so that your shoes don't fall off when you're running and playing? Well, when you tie your shoelaces, you make a knot.

A knot is like when you twist a string or ribbon or something around and tuck it into a loop. When you pull the strings tight, it sticks together and makes a knot, sort of like how you tie your hair up with an elastic band.

When you tie your shoelaces, you make a special knot called a shoelace knot, which is also called a bow or a bowtie knot. You make it by taking one shoelace in each hand, then crossing them over each other and tucking one lace under the other and pulling it tight. Then you make a bow by taking one lace and making a loop, and then doing the same thing with the other lace, but wrapping it around the first loop and tucking it through the hole. Then you pull the loops tight and you have your shoelace knot!

It's important to know how to make a shoelace knot so that your shoes stay on your feet and don't fall off when you're running and playing. Plus, it's a cool skill that you'll use for the rest of your life!
