ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Signal peptide

Have you ever gotten a secret message from a friend that you weren't supposed to share with anyone else? Well, cells in our body also have a secret message that they need to send to other cells. This secret message is called a protein, and it helps our body to function properly.

But here's the thing, in order for the protein to get to the right place in the body, it needs to have a special tag on it. This special tag is called a signal peptide, and it acts like a GPS for the protein.

Just like how you might use a map to find your way to a new place, the signal peptide helps the protein navigate through the cells until it reaches its final destination. The signal peptide is like the address label on a package that helps the delivery person know where to bring it.

Once the protein reaches its final destination, the signal peptide is removed, just like how you would take off the address label once your package has been delivered. And then the protein can do its job and help our body function properly.

So remember, just like how you need directions to get to a new place, proteins need a signal peptide to find their way to the right place in our body.
