Sino-Japanese vocabulary
Do you know how sometimes words in different languages sound similar and mean the same thing? Well, in China and Japan, there are many words that are like that! These words are called "sino-japanese vocabulary."
Hundreds of years ago, the Japanese people went to China to learn things like writing, Buddhism, and how to make pottery. When they learned all these things, they took the Chinese words back to Japan with them. Over time, the Japanese people made small changes to the words so they fit better with their language.
So now, these words that started in China are used in both countries and mean the same thing, even though they sound a little different. Some common examples are "karate," "sushi," and "tsunami."
