Situational code-switching

Okay kiddo, so imagine you have different friends. Some friends speak one language, and some friends speak another language. You want to be friends with all of them, right? But you don't want to confuse them by speaking the wrong language to them. So sometimes you need to switch between languages depending on who you are talking to. This is called situational code-switching.

Code-switching means changing the way you talk depending on who you are talking to. Situational code-switching is when you change the way you talk depending on the situation you are in. For example, if you are talking to your teacher, you might speak more politely and use big words. But if you are playing with your friends, you might use more slang words and speak more casually.

People code-switch for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes it's to fit in with the people they are talking to, sometimes it's to show respect, and sometimes it's just to have fun. It's like putting on a different hat depending on your mood or who you're with.

The important thing to remember is that code-switching is a natural part of communication. Everyone does it! Even adults do it without even realizing it. So don't be afraid to switch between languages or ways of talking, as long as you're doing it in a respectful way that helps you connect with the people you are talking to.
