ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Social cognition

Social cognition is the way people understand and think about their own behavior, the behavior of other people, and the relationships between people. It's an important part of social interaction and communication. Think of it like a big puzzle. In order to make sense of everything that's going on, people need to be able to recognize patterns, connect ideas, and make sense of the people, places, and things around them. For example, say you're at a party and talking with a bunch of people you don't know. To make conversing easier, you can use social cognition to recognize body language and facial expressions. This helps you better understand the other people, and make decisions about how to act and respond.
