ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Social commentary

Social commentary is like when someone watches a movie or reads a book and talks about what they see happening in the story. They might say things like "This movie is showing how some people treat others unfairly because of the color of their skin" or "This book is telling us that it's important to be kind to animals."

Social commentary is like a grown-up explaining what they think is important to understand from the story. They are talking about what the story is trying to teach us about how we should treat other people or how we should act in society. It's like when your teacher tells you the lesson you're supposed to learn from reading a book.

People use social commentary to talk about important issues like race, gender, politics, and more. It's a way for them to share their feelings about what's happening in our world and to try and make things better. And sometimes social commentary can help us understand new things about ourselves and the world we live in.
