ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Social media mining

Social media mining is when people use computers to look at information posted on social media websites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. These computers use special software to find patterns in the posts, likes, comments, and other information that people share. By looking at the patterns, companies and researchers can learn more about the people who use the websites and how they use them. For example, they can learn which products people like or what people think about a certain topic.
