Society for General Microbiology (SGM) is a scientific organization that helps people learn more about tiny living things called microorganisms, like bacteria and viruses. Microorganisms are all around us – from our bodies to the ocean to the air and the soil. SGM was founded in 1945 by scientists interested in learning more about microorganisms and their importance for our lives and our planet. The Society provides information and resources on microorganisms, sponsors research projects and conferences, and supports scientists and students who want to pursue careers in microbiology. SGM’s goal is to help people understand more about microorganisms and how they affect our health and environment.
