ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Software of unknown pedigree

Okay kiddo, have you ever heard of software before? It's a program that runs on a computer or other device to help with different tasks. Now, sometimes people make software and we know who made it and they are trusted, just like when a grown-up tells you something and you know you can believe them. But sometimes people make software and we don't know who made it, and we don't know if they can be trusted. This is called software of unknown pedigree.

It's like when a stranger tries to give you candy. If your mom or dad tells you it's okay and they know the person, then you might take the candy. But if a stranger comes up to you on the street and tries to give you candy, you should say no because you don't know if they can be trusted. The same thing goes for software. If we don't know who made it, we might not want to use it because we don't know if it's safe or if it could harm our computer or other device.

That's why it's important to be careful and only use software that we know is safe, just like how we only take candy from people we know and trust.
