ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Soil gas

Soil gas is like air that lives underground in dirt and rocks. The gas can be made up of different things, like oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and even harmful chemicals like radon or methane.

Imagine you have a sandcastle and you poke a hole in it. If you put your ear close to the hole, you can hear air moving in and out. The air in the sandcastle is like the soil gas in the ground. It moves around and can sometimes come out of the ground in places like natural springs or from pipes used in homes to cook food or heat water.

Scientists study soil gas to check for harmful chemicals or to find out if the ground could be a good place for creatures that live underground like worms, bugs, and roots. By understanding soil gas, we can keep ourselves safe and healthy while also learning more about the world we live in.
