ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Solar nebula

Imagine a big, big cloud in space made up of gas and dust. This big cloud is called a "solar nebula." The solar nebula is like the soup that the Sun and the planets formed from.

When we talk about the solar system, we mean our Sun, the planets that orbit around it, and all the smaller objects like asteroids and comets that also circle around it. This solar system formed from the solar nebula long, long ago.

The solar nebula was made up mostly of hydrogen and helium gas, with tiny bits of other elements like carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen mixed in. There were also tiny specks of dust made of rock and metal. These specks stuck together over time to form bigger and bigger pieces of rock and metal, eventually forming the planets and other objects in the solar system.

So, in short, a solar nebula is a big cloud in space that contains gas, dust, and other elements. It's like a soup that the Sun and planets formed from a long time ago.
