ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Solid earth

Solid earth is everything you can touch and see like the ground you walk on, the mountains you see far away, rocks, and soil. Imagine the earth like an orange, the peel is like the solid earth, and the soft juicy part is the liquid and gas inside the earth. The solid earth has four layers: crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core.

The crust is the topmost layer of the earth, and it is like the thinnest layer of the orange peel. It is where the mountains, oceans, and continents are. The crust is made up of rocks that can be soft or hard, and it is where we live.

The mantle is the second layer, it is thicker than the crust and is like the white part of the orange. The mantle is always in motion and is responsible for causing earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The outer core is the third layer, it is like the orange juice around the orange, and it is very hot. The outer core is made up of liquid metal, which is always moving and responsible for producing Earth's magnetic field.

The inner core is the last layer, it is like the orange seed in the center, and it is very hot and solid. The inner core is also made up of metals like the outer core, but it is under so much pressure that it stays solid.

Overall, the solid earth is a big ball of rock, and it is this rock that gives us a place to live and sustains life.
