ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Soundfield microphone

A soundfield microphone is a special kind of microphone that can record sound in all directions at once. It’s like having many microphones in one!

Imagine you are standing in the center of a circle and people are talking all around you. You can hear what each person is saying because your ears can pick up sounds from every direction. That’s exactly what a soundfield microphone does, but it records what it hears instead of you hearing it.

The microphone has four or more tiny microphones arranged in a special way that captures sound from all directions. The sound that the microphone records is called an “audio sphere” because it records sound from all around it, just like a sphere surrounds something from all sides.

Then, when you listen to the recording, it sounds like you are in the middle of the space where the recording was made. You can hear things happening all around you, like the sound of birds chirping, cars passing by, and people talking.

Soundfield microphones are used for many things, like recording music concerts, sports events, and even in movies to capture the sounds of the environment. They are also great for virtual reality and immersive experiences, where you want to feel like you are really there.

So, the next time you hear a recording that sounds like its coming from all around you, chances are it was made with a soundfield microphone!
