Soviet Central Asia refers to a region in Asia which was formerly part of the Soviet Union. The region includes countries like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan. During the time the Soviet Union existed (1922 - 1991), these countries were part of the Soviet Union. They were ruled by the central government in Moscow, the capital of the Soviet Union. Life in these countries was very different to life in other parts of the world. People were given jobs by the government and had to follow certain rules. They were also not allowed to travel outside of the Soviet Union. After 1991, when the Soviet Union collapsed, the region became independent and each country started to create its own government and laws.
