The Soviet–Afghan War was a conflict that happened in Afghanistan between 1979 and 1989. It was a war between the Soviet Union (a group of countries that used to exist in Europe and Asia, but no longer exists today) and Afghanistan. During the war, the Soviet Union sent its army to Afghanistan to help the Afghan government fight against groups of people who wanted to overthrow the government and create a new government. The war was very difficult, with a lot of violence, and it lasted for ten years. Many people died during the war, and it also caused lots of damage to Afghanistan.
