ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Space toilet

So you know how when you poo or pee, you usually do it on a toilet? When people go to space, they still need to do these things, but it’s a bit different.

You see, in space there is no gravity to help things go down into the toilet. So space toilets have special tubes that suck everything in with air pressure. They also have a seatbelt so you don’t float away while doing your business!

And guess what? Everything that goes into the toilet is turned into drinking water! Yes, you read that right. Astronauts have a special filtering system that cleans and purifies all the waste and turns it into clean, safe water that they can drink.

So that’s how space toilets work. It’s a bit different than the ones we use on Earth, but it gets the job done!
