ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Spearman's hypothesis

Spearman's hypothesis is an idea that says there is a single mental ability that is found in everyone, called "general intelligence" or "g". This ability can be used to do well in many different kinds of tasks, like math or reading or problem-solving.

Think of your brain like a toolbox with different tools in it. Your brain has a tool for reading and another for adding numbers, and another for remembering things. Spearman's hypothesis says that there is one tool that is really important, and it can help you do well with all the other tools in your box.

For example, think of a really smart person you know. They are probably good at many different things, like sports and music and science. Spearman's hypothesis says that this person is not just good at each of these things individually, they are good at them all because of their underlying general intelligence.

It's like your brain has a secret power that helps you learn and understand new things faster and better. And if you have a higher general intelligence, you might use this power to do well in school, get a good job, and become successful in life.
