ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sphere at infinity

Imagine you are playing with a ball on a big open field. Now imagine that this field is so big that you cannot see the boundaries of it, no matter how far you look. This is like the universe, which is infinitely big and has no end.

Now, imagine that you throw the ball as hard as you can and it flies far away, until it is so small that you can barely see it. This is like an object moving further and further away from you in space.

As the object moves further and further away, it becomes smaller and smaller until it looks like a tiny dot. This is like when you move back from your TV and everything on the screen gets smaller and smaller.

Now, imagine that you keep moving back until the object is so far away that it looks like a single point, like a tiny dot on a piece of paper. This is called the "sphere at infinity". It's like looking at a tiny star in the sky that is so far away that it looks like a single point of light.

The sphere at infinity is used in math and physics to describe the behavior of objects that are really far away, like stars or galaxies. It helps scientists understand how these objects move and interact with each other, even though they are so far away.
