When you look around, you can see things from different angles, like different sides of a cube or the outside of a ball. Spherical image projection is the process of taking a two-dimensional picture, like a rectangle or photograph, and "stretching" it to fit around something three-dimensional, like a ball. This is done by using something called mathematics that can make flat images wrap around curved surfaces. It's a bit like taking something flat and folding it up so that it looks like it has a 3-D shape.
