ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Square inch

A square inch is a little piece of space that is exactly one inch long and one inch wide. You know how when you look at a ruler, there are little lines that show you how long something is? Well, if you measure something that is one inch long and one inch wide, that is called a square inch.

For example, if you have a tiny piece of paper that is one inch by one inch, that piece of paper is one square inch. It's kind of like a little puzzle piece that fits perfectly into a larger puzzle.

Square inches are useful because they help us measure how much space things take up. For example, if you wanted to know how much space a book takes up on a shelf, you would need to measure the length and width of the book in inches, and then multiply those two numbers together to find the number of square inches the book takes up.

So even though square inches might seem like a small thing, they help us understand the world around us in a really important way!
