ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Square root of a 2 by 2 matrix

Okay, imagine you have a box that has two rows and two columns of little boxes inside. This is called a matrix. Inside each little box, there is a number.

Now, when someone talks about the square root of this matrix, they want to find another matrix that when multiplied by itself (like when you count how many apples you have by multiplying the number of rows by the number of columns), gives you the original matrix again.

It's like trying to find a secret treasure box inside the bigger box that, when you open it, it has exactly the same things as the bigger box.

So, finding the square root of a matrix is like finding a smaller box that, when you multiply it by itself, gives you back the same things that were in the original big box.
