Stack interchange

So, have you ever seen a stack of pancakes? You know how one pancake is on top of another one? That's kind of like a stack interchange!

Basically, when people are driving on the highway, they need to be able to switch from one freeway to another one. A stack interchange is a specific way that the roads can be designed to make this happen.

Imagine the pancakes again - if you were going to eat the second pancake, you would need to pick it up from underneath the first pancake. That's kind of like how a stack interchange works! Instead of having one road go over the other one, like a bridge, there are different "stacks" of roads.

So, one road might be on top and another one on bottom, but to switch from one to the other you don’t have to drive over the other road. Instead, you drive up a ramp, just like a pancake stack! You get onto a higher level of road and then switch over to the other road.

And since cars are going in different directions, there’s a lot of ramps and loops to help them go safely from one road to the other. So, a stack interchange is basically like a big pancake stack with ramps and loops, but for cars instead of pancakes!
