ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Staging (theatre)

Staging is like playing pretend on a big stage with lots of people watching. When we play pretend, we make up a story and act it out with our friends. When we do it on stage, we call it a play, and there are a lot of things we have to think about to make it look good for the audience.

First, we have to decide where everyone will stand and move around. This is called blocking. We don't want everyone to be in the same spot or moving in a confusing way, so we plan it out ahead of time.

We also have to think about what the stage will look like. We might use big pieces of scenery, like walls or trees, to help the audience know where we are. We might also use smaller things, like chairs or tables, to create a specific setting.

Then there are the costumes. We wear special clothes that help the audience know who we are and what time period the play is set in. If we were doing a play about cowboys, we might wear cowboy hats and boots.

Finally, we have to practice a lot! We go over all of the blocking and make sure we remember our lines. We also practice things like entrances and exits, so that everything runs smoothly.

When we perform the play for the audience, we hope that they enjoy watching us play pretend and that they feel like they are a part of the story we are telling.
