Stamp duty

Stamp duty is a tax you have to pay when you buy something big, like a house. It's like paying a fee to the government to let you do the big purchase. The government sets the amount you have to pay and it is usually quite a lot of money. The money from the stamp duty helps the government pay for things like roads, hospitals and schools.
