ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Standard Tibetan

Standard Tibetan is a way people who live in Tibet use to speak and write. Just like how we learn our ABCs and how to say words, they learn Tibetan letters and how to say words in that language. Standard Tibetan is what most people in Tibet use to talk to each other and write things down.

It's a little bit like a secret code that they have to learn so that they can talk to each other in a way that everyone understands. And just like there are rules when we play games, there are rules when we speak and write Standard Tibetan, so that everyone is playing by the same rules and can understand each other.

Some people might speak or write Tibetan in a slightly different way depending on where they are from or who they are talking to, but Standard Tibetan is a way for everyone to be able to communicate with each other.
