Standard anatomical position

Okay kiddo, imagine that you are standing up straight with your arms by your side, palms facing forward (like you're trying to show everyone the inside of your hands). That's the standard anatomical position! It's a way to describe how people are positioned in a way that we can all understand and compare to one another. It's like putting a toy back in its packaging so we can see all of its parts clearly. Doctors, scientists, and people who study the human body use this position a lot so they can describe where things are in the body and what they do. So if someone says "the heart is located in the chest cavity," we know that means it's in the middle of the body, near the lungs and behind the ribcage, because that's where it is in the standard anatomical position. Cool, huh?
