Unicode is a way of making sure that computers all around the world can read the same text information. It works by assigning a special code – called a Unicode code point – to each letter, number and symbol. That way, when someone sends a message on their computer, it can be read the same way no matter where it’s seen. For example, if someone made the blue heart emoji ❤️ on one computer, any other computer that looks at it will understand that it’s a blue heart emoji, even if they don’t have the same type of emoji. Unicode helps make sure this happens.
