ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Staple (textiles)

Okay kiddo, so a staple is like a big stick made of threads. When we talk about staples in textiles, it means the length of those threads.

When we make clothes or fabric, we use different types of fibers like cotton, wool, or polyester. These fibers are long, thin threads that are spun together to make yarn. But sometimes we need shorter threads to make fabric. So we take these long fibers and cut them into shorter pieces, which we call staples.

These staples are then spun together to make yarn that is used to make fabric or clothes. Different fibers have different lengths of staples. For example, cotton staples are usually shorter than wool staples.

So when you see the word staple in textiles, just remember it means the length of the threads we use to make fabric and clothes.
