State function

A state function is a type of mathematical function. A state function tells you the value of something and whether it changes depending on what comes before it. Imagine there's a machine that you put objects into. Every time you put an object into the machine, it has a certain number it displays. The number it displays is a state function because it tells you the value of the machine and whether that value changes each time you put something in.
