ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Stopping sight distance

Stopping sight distance is when you're driving a car and you're trying to see far enough in front of you to make sure it's safe to stop your car. You can only stop your car when you've seen enough of the road in front of you to make sure that there's nothing in your way that might make you crash.

Just like how you have to make sure it's safe to cross the street before you cross, drivers have to make sure it's safe to stop their cars before they stop.

Stopping sight distance is the distance that you need to see in front of you in order to be able to safely stop your car. So if you're driving on a road and the road is really curvy or hilly, you might not be able to see far enough in front of you to be able to stop safely. In those cases, you might need to slow down or even stop and wait until you can see the road ahead of you better.
