ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Storegga Slide

Well kiddo, there was a really big thing called the Storegga Slide that happened a long time ago. It was like a big slide underwater, but instead of just falling down, it was so big it made a really huge wave that traveled all the way to faraway places.

So, you know how sometimes when you go to the beach, you make a sandcastle and then knock it down with your hand? Well, imagine if that sandcastle was really, really big, and it was on the bottom of the ocean. Then imagine that instead of using your hand to knock it down, the sandcastle just fell apart all by itself. That's kind of like what happened with the Storegga Slide.

The huge wave it made was like a huge splash, but even bigger than when you do a cannonball in the pool. This splash traveled all the way from where it happened in Norway, all the way across the ocean to places like Scotland, England, and other faraway spots. It was so big that the wave was taller than the Statue of Liberty!

Scientists still don't know exactly why the Storegga Slide happened, but they think maybe it was because of big changes in the earth's climate, or maybe even a really big earthquake. But one thing we do know is that it was a really important event in the earth's history, and scientists are still studying it today to learn more about how our planet works.
