ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Studio/transmitter link

Ok, imagine you are playing with two toys - a toy phone and a toy car. One toy (the phone) is in your hand, and the other toy (the car) is on the other side of the room. But you want to talk to your friend who is playing with the car.

So, what do you do? You use the toy phone to talk to your friend through the airwaves! The sound waves from your voice go into the toy, and then they travel through the air to the toy phone that your friend is holding. Then, your friend's toy phone turns those sound waves back into your voice!

A studio/transmitter link is kind of like a grown-up version of this game. A radio station has a big building called a "studio" where they talk and play music into microphones. But, they want people who are far away to be able to hear them. So, they use a special kind of toy phone called a "transmitter" to send their voices and music through the airwaves to people's car radios or home radios.

The studio and the transmitter are connected by a special link, which is like a long string between the two toys. The link sends the sound waves from the studio to the transmitter, which then sends them out into the air so people can tune into the radio station and hear what's going on in the studio.

So, just like you and your friend used a toy phone to talk to each other through the air, a radio station uses a studio/transmitter link to talk to people far away and let them enjoy music and talk shows. Cool, huh?
