ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Subharmonic

Alright kiddo, imagine you have a toy whistle that you blow into. When you blow it, high-pitched sound comes out. The sound the whistle makes is called the "fundamental" or "primary" frequency.

Now, let's pretend you can magically make the whistle make a second sound at the same time, but the second sound is a lower frequency. This sound is called the "subharmonic" frequency. It's like a smaller version of the first sound, kind of like a toy whistle within a toy whistle.

Subharmonic frequencies can also happen in real life, like with musical instruments. When a guitar string is plucked or a drum is hit, the fundamental frequency is produced along with subharmonic frequencies. We might not hear those subharmonics, but they contribute to the overall sound we do hear.

So, a subharmonic is when a lower frequency is produced alongside the main sound or fundamental frequency. It's like a little cousin to the main sound that adds a little extra something to the sound we hear.
