Submarine canyon

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a big mountain range underwater? They're called underwater mountains or seamounts. Now, sometimes rivers flow into the ocean and carry a lot of sand, rocks and mud with them. When this stuff flows into the ocean it forms a big heap of sediment at the bottom of the ocean.

Over time, this heap of sediment can get bigger and bigger and sometimes it can even slide down the underwater mountain. This creates a kind of underwater valley that is called a submarine canyon. Think of it like a big, long and deep scratch in the ocean floor.

Now, submarine canyons can be very important because they can help marine creatures find a home. These canyons can create strong currents that carry food for fishes and other sea animals. Moreover, some scientists also believe that submarine canyons can play an important role in helping to transport nutrients and minerals between different parts of the ocean.
