Submarine groundwater discharge

Do you know what a submarine is? Yes, it's a big boat that can go underwater! And do you know what groundwater is? It's the water that's under the ground, like when you see a puddle outside after it rains.

Well, sometimes the water that's under the ground can seep out and go into the ocean! We call this submarine groundwater discharge. It's like the water is trying to escape from under the ground and make its way to the ocean.

The funny thing is, you can't really see it happening because it's all happening underwater. But scientists can use special tools to measure how much water is coming out of the ground and going into the ocean.

Submarine groundwater discharge is important because it can affect how clean the water is in the ocean. Sometimes, the water that comes from under the ground can bring with it things like pollutants or other chemicals. So, we want to understand how much of this is happening so we can make sure the water in the ocean stays healthy and safe for animals and plants.
