ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Subnational entity

Okay kiddo, imagine you are playing with your toys and you have a big toy box. The toy box is like a country, but inside the toy box, there are also smaller boxes where you keep different types of toys. These smaller boxes are like subnational entities.

A subnational entity is basically a smaller region inside of a bigger country. It can be a state, province, territory, or even a city. Just like how you have different types of toys in your smaller toy boxes, subnational entities can have different laws, cultures, and even languages within them.

For example, in the United States, California is a state and it has its own governor and laws that are different from other states like Texas or New York. In Canada, Quebec is a province where they speak French as their main language, while most other provinces speak English.

Sometimes, subnational entities have their own government and are in charge of things like education, healthcare, and transportation for the people who live there. But they also have to follow the rules and laws set by the bigger country they belong to.

So basically, a subnational entity is a smaller region within a bigger country with its own unique qualities and government, but still a part of the bigger country overall.
