ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Subordination (linguistics)

Subordination in linguistics is like playing a game with two levels. Level one is the main idea or sentence, and level two is a smaller idea or sentence that supports the main idea. It's like building a tower with big LEGO blocks (the main idea) and smaller LEGO blocks that fit into the big blocks (the subordinating idea).

Let's pretend you want to tell a story about a cat. The main idea might be "The cat chased a mouse." That's the big LEGO block. But then you remember that the cat was outside at night, so you want to add that detail. You could say "The cat, who loved to hunt, chased a mouse outside in the dark." The smaller LEGO block "who loved to hunt" is a subordinating idea because it supports the main idea that the cat chased a mouse.

In summary, subordination is when you use smaller ideas (subordinate clauses) to support a bigger idea (main clause). It's like building a tower with different sizes of LEGO blocks.
