ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Subrogation

So, let's say you have a toy that your friend really wants to play with. Your friend really wants that toy, but you don't want to give it away forever. But, you wouldn't mind letting your friend use it for a little while.

Now, let's say your friend accidentally breaks the toy while they're playing with it. If you didn't have subrogation, you would just have to deal with the broken toy and your friend would have to say sorry but wouldn't have to pay for a new toy.

But, with subrogation, your friend's parents can pay for a new toy because they caused the damage. They become responsible for the damage they caused, instead of you having to deal with the broken toy on your own.

Subrogation is kind of like adults taking responsibility when something is broken, just like how moms and dads take responsibility when toys break because they want to make sure everything is fair and everyone is happy in the end.
