ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Subspecies

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a cat and a tiger? They both are in the same animal family called "felidae", but they look very different right? That's because they belong to different subspecies.

Subspecies is a name we give to a group of animals that are very similar to each other, but they have some slight differences. These differences could be in color, size or shape.

Just like how you have friends who are different from you, but they are still your friends, animals can have subspecies among their own kind. For example, dogs have many subspecies like chihuahuas, labradors, and german shepherds.

Scientists give these subspecies a special name, like how a lion's subspecies is called Panthera leo leo, and a tiger's subspecies is called Panthera tigris tigris.

Hope that helps you understand what subspecies are!
