A lot of people feel very sad and scared sometimes and don't know what to do. This feeling is called depression, and can be really hard to cope with. Sometimes, people with depression feel like suicide is the only option.
French sociologist Émile Durkheim wrote a book about suicide and why it happens. He said that sometimes people who are feeling really sad and low can feel like they're alone, but what he found is that, when people are surrounded by a community or group, they're less likely to feel this way. He argued that when people feel connected and have strong social relationships, they're more likely to feel supported, and less likely to feel alone. He also argued that certain issues, like people's jobs, or the way their society works, can have a big effect on how people feel. All these things can lead people to choose to take their own lives.
