ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Supermassive black hole

Okay, kiddo, do you know what a black hole is? It's like a place in space where there's so much stuff squeezed together really tight that nobody can escape, not even light! It's like being in a really deep and dark hole that you can't climb out of, no matter how much you try.

Now, a supermassive black hole is like a black hole, but it's much, much bigger- like a trillion times bigger than our Sun! We don't know exactly how they form, but we think they start off as normal black holes and just keep growing and growing by gobbling up stars, gas, and everything around them.

These big black holes are usually found in the centers of galaxies, which is kind of like the middle of a big spinning wheel. They have a very strong gravitational pull, which means they can control how everything moves around them. Like imagine if you had a really big magnet in the middle of a bunch of metal toys- all the toys would be pulled towards the magnet and clump together.

Because supermassive black holes are so big and powerful, they can affect everything around them, like stars, gas, and other black holes. They can also make light bend and warp around them, which can make it look like there's weird stuff happening in space. Scientists are still learning about these supermassive black holes and how they affect our universe.
