ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Surrealist techniques

Surrealist techniques are ways that artists use to create weird and unexpected art. Let me explain it to you just like you are five years old.

Remember the time when we played with crayons and mixed all the colors together and it made a beautiful, surprising new color? That's a bit like what surrealist techniques do. They mix different things together to make something amazing and strange.

For example, an artist might combine two very different things in one picture: like a fish with a human head. That's called a "hybrid" and it's a surrealistic technique. Or they might draw a scene from a dream they had, where things don't make much sense, like a house with a marshmallow cloud above it. This is called "dream imagery."

Surrealist artists also like to play games to create their work. One of these games is called "exquisite corpse." This game involves several people taking turns drawing a picture, without seeing what the others have drawn. When the picture is complete, it will be bewildering and mysterious!

Another Surrealist technique is “decollage”, which means “to cut” in French. They take an existing picture or image and cut it into pieces then later assemble it in a new composition.

These are just a few of the many techniques that Surrealist artists use to make intriguing and surreal pieces of art. Just like when we mix up the colors of our crayons, surrealists mix up things in their art to make something fantastic that makes us look at the world in a different way.
