ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sussex pledge

Okay kiddo, let me explain the Sussex Pledge to you. Back in the old days, during a big war, there were boats called submarines that could go underwater and sneak up on other boats. Sometimes these submarines would sink other boats without warning, killing a lot of people. That's not very nice, is it?

Well, one country called Germany was doing this a lot and it made some other countries very upset. So, Germany made a promise called the Sussex Pledge that they would stop sinking boats without warning. They promised to give a warning first so that people on the boat could escape before it sank.

The other countries were happy about this promise because it meant there would be fewer people dying in the war. It was an important step towards making the war a little bit less terrible.
