Sweep rowing is a way of rowing a boat where you use one oar instead of two like you would in normal rowing. Imagine you have a really big paddle that you hold with two hands. In sweep rowing, you only use one of your hands to hold the paddle and push it through the water.
Instead of sitting side by side with another person like you would in a canoe, you sit in a long boat with eight to ten other people. Each person in the boat only uses one of their hands to row with, either their right or their left. So everyone in the boat is either on the right or the left side.
When you row using one oar, you have to angle the oar properly to make sure it goes through the water correctly. You also have to make sure you stay in sync with the other people in the boat or else it could tip over! By working together and rowing in the same rhythm, the boat can go very fast and smoothly through the water.
Sweep rowing can be very challenging and requires a lot of teamwork, communication and focus. But it can also be a lot of fun to be part of a big group all rowing together towards a common goal.
